Goals

Our Overall Goal

Perhaps it is difficult to imagine, but several thousand people in Sumner County live in sub-standard housing.  Sub-standard housing means anything from rat- and roach-infested apartments to 7 or 8 people cramped into a one bedroom home with no electricity.

It is Habitat’s goal to give all people the opportunity to live in conditions that offer safety and security.  Experiencing the pride of ownership enables owners to return the blessings they have received back to the community.

One Sumner County Habitat homeowner explained her situation before she moved into her Habitat house:  “We had five people living in a 2-bedroom duplex. Our rent was more than it is now for the mortgage on our new home.”

Another homeowner indicated that she was trying to get away from a bad marriage and protect her daughter.  She and her little girl were sleeping on friends’ couches -- essentially homeless.  She was so pleased with the option Habitat gave her since she was quickly running out of choices.

A Habitat owner in Portland was excited about the opportunity to work on his own house and found the experience educational; he has learned so much about upkeep and home repair. With the affordability of the Habitat home and the stability of ownership, he says he is now able to, “Consider our future and plan for a better life.”

Habitat for Humanity International and our local Habitat for Humanity of Sumner County work as partners in an ecumenical Christian housing ministry. A hand up rather than a handout aptly describes our mission.  The local affiliate helps people who are struggling to make ends meet.  We believe if we can help a family get on its feet, the whole community benefits because that family then contributes in many ways to the betterment of Sumner County.

Immediate Goals of Habitat for Sumner County

We have received a very generous donation of property on West Eastland.  We are now in the planning stages of creating a subdivision of 12 homes.  These homes will house 12 more families from Sumner County who are living in inadequate circumstances.

We have recently opened ReStore at 241 West Eastland where we accept donations of building materials, appliances, furniture, electronics, etc.  We then sell these donated items to the public and use the funds generated to build more Habitat homes in Sumner County.
