Meet the 2019 Raise the Roof Partner Family

Habitat for Humanity of Sumner County is pleased to introduce our 2019 Raise the Roof Build Partner Family, Jessica and Ja’Kenya Head of Gallatin. Jessica began the process to quality for a Habitat home more than a year ago and has been working hard with the support of her friends and family to complete her 200 hours of sweat equity required as part of the home ownership program. Habitat homes aren’t free – they’re affordable. Once complete, Jessica and her daughter will move into new home in Gallatin with a zero percent interest, affordable mortgage.

Jessica, a graduate of Gallatin High School, has worked as an Instructor and Van Driver for H.A.T.S. in Gallatin. She will celebrate her four-year work anniversary with the organization in June, 2019. With encouragement from her grandmother to apply for a Habitat home nearly two years ago, Jessica explained she decided to ‘just go for it,’ knowing the worst thing that could happen was that she just wouldn’t qualify. “Tears of joy just started flowing down my face when I got the call (of approval),” Jessica shared. “I was so happy.”

Jessica and her daughter currently live in a local apartment complex where she worries about her daughter’s safety with the traffic in the complex parking lot. She is looking forward to owning a home with a yard. “We can’t wait to move into our new home and my daughter is looking forward to playing outside in our own yard,” Jessica said.

Growing up, Jessica and her parents moved to several different areas of Sumner County, sometimes living in public housing. “My mom and dad are so proud of me for accomplishing this at my age,” Jessica said. “My family, friends and coworkers have been behind me the whole way throughout this process.”

The groundbreaking for Jessica and Ja’Kenya’s new home in Gallatin is scheduled for Fall, 2019.
