2019 WOMEN BUILD
Each spring more than 10,000 women raise their hammers at Habitat for Humanity construction sites across the country in recognition of National Women Build Week. National Women Build challenges women to devote at least one day to help build affordable housing in their local communities. Habitat for Humanity of Sumner County will begin work on its 11th annual Women Build home on April 26, 2019 in Portland, TN.
Habitat for Humanity of Sumner County’s Women Build is made possible through generous donations from local businesses, organizations and individuals along with proceeds raised from the Women Building the Community After Hours event. The fundraising goal for this build was $50,000 in cash and in-kind donations of building materials and resources.

Meet the 2019 Women Build Family
“Why don’t you apply for a Habitat home?” a family friend asked Lexxus, a single mother of four. Lexxus had sought advice from the family friend when she was going through a difficult time, living with her kids in public housing and realizing she wanted to start working toward a better future for her family. That family friend, who was also a Habitat homeowner, explained the process to Lexxus and she decided then and there to ‘just go for it!’
That was nearly two years ago. Lexxus spent several months repairing her credit and completing the application process. In December 2017, Lexxus signed her partnership agreement with Habitat for Humanity of Sumner County and began working on her sweat equity. “I just love this program,” Lexxus explained. She is halfway through earning her sweat equity hours, volunteering her time in the Habitat for Humanity of Sumner County ReStore. While too young to volunteer, her two oldest children are also contributing to earning the family’s required hours—one hour for every A and B they earn in school. “I love that this program encourages my children to do well in school and they love that they can be part of this process.”
“When I started this process two years ago, I knew I wanted to focus on the future. I wanted something of my own for me and my kids,” she shared. “I just want to make a better life for my kids.”
Lexxus, who recently celebrated her five-year work anniversary with the Kroger grocery store chain, is looking forward to moving into her new home. Habitat for Humanity of Sumner County is set to begin construction on her family’s new home April 26, 2019. “We talk about the new house all of the time. We are looking forward to moving in, decorating and finally having our own place.” Habitat homes aren’t free – they are affordable. Lexxus will have an interest-free mortgage on a brand-new home, and if everything goes according to plan, she and her children will be celebrating the 2019 holidays next year in a home of their own.
